COVID-19 Update

Dear students, faculty and staff members,

Earlier this week, a team of ÐÓ°ÉרÇø personnel met to discuss COVID-19, or coronavirus, and to outline how UL Lafayette would respond should it affect our community.

ItÐÓ°ÉרÇø™s important to note that there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Louisiana.

Nevertheless, because the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff remains the paramount concern of the ÐÓ°ÉרÇø, preparation for any eventuality is key.

In the coming days, you may receive notices from various campus departments and units concerning COVID-19. Let me urge you to pay attention to ÐÓ°ÉרÇø email, official social media accounts and this page on the ÐÓ°ÉרÇøÐÓ°ÉרÇø™s website for these important messages.

This health situation is ever-changing, so itÐÓ°ÉרÇø™s essential you stay informed.

The ÐÓ°ÉרÇø is working closely with the Louisiana Office of Public Health to get essential information to the campus community as quickly as possible. WeÐÓ°ÉרÇø™re also monitoring the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. State Department and will provide updates as needed.

ItÐÓ°ÉרÇø™s important to remember that itÐÓ°ÉרÇø™s also flu season. Symptoms of the flu mirror those of COVID-19, and Louisiana has some of the highest flu rates in the country.

To protect yourself and others from the flu and other respiratory diseases, members of the campus community:

  • Should seek immediate medical attention if they are experiencing fever, cough or having difficulty breathing.
  • Should not attend classes, work or ÐÓ°ÉרÇø events if they are ill. They should stay home except when seeking medical care and should avoid contact with others.
  • Should cover their mouths or noses with a tissue or their shirtsleeves ÐÓ°ÉרÇø“ not their hands ÐÓ°ÉרÇø“ when coughing or sneezing.
  • Should wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

Basic health practices ÐÓ°ÉרÇø“ combined with awareness of the latest information and guidance regarding COVID-19 ÐÓ°ÉרÇø“ will ensure the continued wellbeing of the ÐÓ°ÉרÇø community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joseph Savoie
President
